To meet the Federal hearing standard, the driver must successfully complete one hearing test with one ear.




Regulations — driver must:

  1. First perceive a forced, whispered voice in one ear at not less than five feet, OR
  2. Not have an average hearing loss in one ear greater than 40 decibels (dB) at 500 hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz.

A driver may use a hearing aid to meet the standard.
